Jackson Brodie walks away from the Cambridge PD and sets up a private detective business. He takes on some very cold cases. Three and a half decades after their three-year-old sister was kidnapped, two middle-aged women tell him that they found their sister Olivia's blue mouse in their father's office after he died. A retired lawyer, who cannot come to grips with the random murder of his 18-year-old daughter a decade ago, asks for help in finding the killer. Lastly, the younger sister of a convicted axe murderer of her husband seeks help finding her niece. He begins to look into things, and three attempts on his life follow. Things get messy before they are all tied together. Not sure how this wound up 17th on the NYT's Best Thrillers of the Century So Far, but it didn't work for me.
