After reading Books 2–9, I returned to the first, which provides the background on how the horses ended up at the house. As terrorists threaten to behead a young Englishman of Pakistani descent on social media, Lamb calls a meeting with Taverner. Lamb quickly susses out that the kidnapping was orchestrated by MI5 with the intention of staging a rescue and humiliating England's rising right wing. When the agent planted among the terrorists is found dead, Taverner announces that Lamb and the Slow Horses have gone rogue. If Lamb can be outfoxed, it certainly isn't by Lady Di Taverner. The horses run circles around her and make sure she ends up owing Lamb a favor.
