Chelsea and Paul Tanner are enjoying their honeymoon in Paris when they are kidnapped and held for ransom. Chelsea's dad easily comes up with the $2 million ransom while Paul's parents struggle to. The kidnappers release Chelsea, but not Paul. Everything goes quiet. When the FBI and CIA are brought in, they come to an unpleasant conclusion. This is the third time that French kidnappers have kept the husband after releasing the wife. All three men are former military and current government lawyers. Paul is moved to Algeria, where he is starved, beaten, and waterboarded. After months, he learns why when he chats with his chief captor, Nabeed. Nabeed was at Abu Ghraib, a dark site in Poland, and Guantanamo for a total of eight years. He was completely innocent, as was his brother, whom the US murdered in captivity. He is now seeking revenge. The US hatches a plan to send another couple to France and see if they can trace their whereabouts after another kidnapping. Plenty of action in this one with the usual tidy Grisham conclusion.
